Women of Color In Japan: D.C. Screening

On Saturday, October 9th, 2021, Melanin Unscripted (MU) and Mehari Sequar Gallery hosted an event commemorating the upcoming premiere of Women of Color in Japan, MU’s latest short documentary film directed by Washington DC born, Nigerian-American storyteller Amarachi Nwosu. The event consisted of two screenings, Black in Tokyo (2017), followed by Women of Color in Japan (2021). The audience also had the opportunity to hear from Nwosu during a post-screening Q+A session moderated by writer and cultural worker Anisa Olufemi.

Through this screening event, MU and Mehari Sequar Gallery aimed to bring DC’s BIPOC creative community together and use the film WOC In Japan as a starting point to generate a critically engaged conversation around marginalization, diasporas, and the nuanced realities of being a WOC artist — in Japan and beyond. MU’s mission is not only to highlight narratives that are often underrepresented, but to bring together a community of aspiring artists and facilitate spaces that encourage informative and inspirational dialogue.
